Frequently Asked Questions

+ How long is a therapy (individual/group) session?

An individual therapy session is 1 hour with 50 minutes dedicated to treatment and 10 minutes for parent education and transitioning out of the session. Group sessions range from 1 to 2 hours in length wherein treatment occurs for all but the last 10 minutes which are, like individual sessions, are reserved for parent education and transitioning out of the session.

+ How will we know when it is time to discharge from therapy?

Indications that it might be time to discharge include:
  • When goals have been met
  • When there is no significant progress towards goals
  • When there is no outcome from therapy (no functional gain)
  • When family chooses to discontinue
  • When the child would benefit from a different therapy setting (school, home, community) and/or a different therapist
  • When behavioral issues significantly interfere with your child's abilities to make progress in this setting
  • At therapist's and/or pediatrician's discretion

+ Can I stay during the session?

For children under the age of 3, a parent must stay with their child during the therapy session. This is a great opportunity to see what the therapist is doing with your child to stimulate language. For children over the age of 3, it is preferred that the parent not remain with the child for the session. Experience indicates that children at this age are more motivated to work when parents are not present in the room during the session. However, parents are encouraged to wait in the waiting area. Additionally, homework is given at the end of each session and reviewed with parents so that skills covered during the session are also practiced at home.
